From Spreadsheet to Corporate Database

Background

A USA based Supermajor was evaluating pore space for carbon storage onshore, with existing CO2 pipelines, with a view to managing the high levels of CO2 being produced by heavy industry in the area.  The project evaluations were being carried out with spreadsheets, which were easily available and simple to create, but very quickly became complex and unmanageable.

Specific Challenges

The spreadsheets were being shared by various individuals, creating multiple adaptations and versions, leading to user errors, lack of transparency for QC purposes and time-consuming aggregations and updates.  The project team needed shareable data throughout the team, with strict version control and standardised units, but legacy software had neither the viability nor future plans for improvement, and, while internal software development was considered, the need for a suitable solution was more immediate.

Solution

Discussions with the client enabled a solution to be developed using Ariane software.  Together we developed workflows and database with the critical functionality required to carry out the project successfully, with built-in version control, standardisation and flexibility for future projects, without compromising the integrity of the data. Users were able to adapt quickly and easily to the change in software and way of working.

Outcome

The client was enabled to successfully execute the project with increased efficiency and QC, as well as increased transparency and long-term data integrity.  As a result, the customer was able to move away from spreadsheets entirely and now deploy Ariane as standard at corporate level.
